Pre-Authorizing a Prescription

When a prescription has no remaining authorization, it can be refilled as either pre-authorized or unauthorized. Pre-authorizing allows the prescription to be authorized, billing to be submitted, and a complete label set to be printed. If the product is monitored through Inventory, the on-hand amount will decrement. You can pre-authorize a refill before you receive authorization from the doctor. When you fill a pre-authorized prescription, claims are sent to the patient's third parties.

Example: A patient needs a regular medication filled. She gets 30 tablets each month, however she has no remaining refills. The doctor always authorizes the prescription for three months (90 tablets). The most efficient option is to pre-authorize the prescription for 90 tablets, as the patient will be provided with a vial copy and receipt reflecting the appropriate number of repeats.
